Excessive Stomach Gas in the Morning Only – Why Does It Happen?
Gas is experienced by everyone regardless of who they are, what they eat or how they live. It is simply a biological process, built in to each and every person. WebMD points out that while everyone does in fact encounter intestinal gas; some experience it more than others and, at different times throughout the day. There are two main causes for abdominal gas. One is simply swallowing air. The act of air swallowing is certainly not a conscious activity, however certain activities like smoking, using straws, drinking carbonated beverages and chewing gum can all elevate the amount of swallowed air taken in, and therefore, can lead to excessive stomach gas. The other big cause of abdominal gas? Fart friendly foods like fruits, sodas, certain vegetables and of course, beans. Depending on the individual anatomy of each individual, gas can be frequent or occasional, and may intensify with certain activities such as consumption of foods known to cause stomach bloating and gas, or partaking in extra air eating. It can occur at any time during the day or night and even while sleeping. For some however, the morning is where excessive stomach gas can be most produced, and there are a couple reasons why this might be happening.
One simple explanation for a morning time increase in gassiness is simply that stored gas that has managed to hang about in the intestines is released en masse upon awakening. To put it simply, during the awake hours of the day, stomach gas relief can be had at any time with a belch, burp or touch of flatulence occurring as needed throughout. Overnight, this stomach gas can build up; and, while the occasional nighttime gas release is not unheard of, sometimes a surplus of built up excessive stomach gas can be found lingering about, making for a rather gassy morning.
Being regular may also be one of the reasons why gas can occur more frequently in the mornings, although for most, that is hardly a bad thing. WebMD mentions that contractions from the small intestine can actually cause gassiness and a noisy tummy, which most people refer to as a growling stomach. The stomach however is being quiet and the noises heard and excessive stomach gas that can result are simply a product of contracting muscles as they move air about through the digestive tract during regular morning bowel movements.
Another reason why gas may disturb a morning routine may be a result of indigestion symptoms, carried over from meals past. As proctologist Dr. Lester Gottesman describes in an uncensored interview with Vice.com, transit times throughout the intestine differ from person to person; however, on average, it is just about under a day and a half that it takes for eaten food to make it through the entire process of digestion. Therefore, while it may seem that morning indigestion symptoms including gas are punishment for bad meal decisions the night before, it may actually be a delayed reaction to a lunch or dinner from two days before instead.
There are many things that can cause excessive flatulence and other symptoms of abdominal gas. Some can lead to a worsening of gas in the morning as well. The fermentation of bacteria in the intestinal tract, certain underlying health conditions such as Celiac disease or even a dairy intolerance, can also lead to annoyingly abundant bouts of excessive stomach gas, resulting in unwanted burping, belching and excessive flatulence. At times, the symptoms of these can be most pronounced in the morning, when relaxed and docile muscles are sprung into action often quickly, ready to rapidly release their holdings.
In almost all cases, excessive stomach gas is simply an occasionally embarrassing normal result of healthy bowel function that is unique to everyone in terms of frequency, sound and of course, smells. Its ability to make itself more abundant in the morning has much more to do with what is being eaten, when it is being eaten and when it is coming out than anything that should warrant concern. However, excessive stomach gas can in some cases be an underlying sign of potentially problematic health conditions. And, when new symptoms such vomiting, weight loss, pain, signs of water retention or a worsening of any existing symptoms appear, a consultation with a health care provider is advisable to rule out a more ominous cause of abdominal gas, above and beyond indigestion and other everyday sources.
